Alaska’s longest season may not be the most popular for fishing. If you persist through the elements, the rewards are bountiful. Unlike any other season, winter in Alaska is overwhelmingly cold. It surrounds you unrelenting and unforgiving. Typical drives to your favorite fishing hole in the summer become treacherous journeys only to be attempted when the conditions are just right. In fact, the vast majority of streams freeze up rendering fly or spin casting impossible. Many folks opt for the winter classic of ice fishing. There are, however, a few places that you can still swing a fly or cast a spoon as late as January. Many species of fish are still eager to play. Fish like late-season silver salmon, trout, and steelhead are all options for those willing to try. Winter is a beautiful time to cozy up next to a warm fire for some. If you’re like us, it’s the perfect time to grab that rod for one final hoorah.
